History

In 1919, Peter Leopold, along with his brothers George and Basil, founded Leopold’s Ice Cream at the corner of Gwinnett and Habersham Streets in Savannah. Peter had been taught the art of making home made super-premium ice cream and developed proprietary recipes for this delicious treat. Many lasting memories were made at Leopold’s between 1920 and 1970 since it was "THE" gathering place for all of Savannah, including famed lyricist Johnny Mercer, who grew up a block away. There were many favorite flavors. The signature flavor, Tutti-Frutti was often shipped all over the United States. After George and Peter passed away, Peter’s son Stratton ran the Gwinnett Street store. His uncle Basil ran the store at the Medical Arts Shopping Center.
